Institute of Allergy and Clinical Immunology of Bangladesh (IACIB) is a Non Government Non profit Organization registered under Ministry of Social Welfare (Registration No. DA-03362 Dated: 28 August 1995) & NGO Affairs Bureau (Registration No 1440, Dated: 25 October 1999) Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.

IACIB is led by its founder Prof. Dr. Moazzem Hossain, Professor of Microbiology and Immunology. IACIB has 21 General members with 7 members of its Executive Committee. Professor Dr. Moazzem Hossain, Chairman IACIB, is a specialist in Microbiology, Immunology & Biotechnology with long experience in operation of Govt. & NGO projects. He worked in Directorate General of Health Service, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare as Director Disease Control for long.He received the ‘Vestergaard Frandsen Award 2011’ from the National Academy of Vectors and Vector Borne Diseases, India for the South East Asian region for his outstanding contributions in the field of communicable diseases control in Bangladesh. His work has been appreciated by various national and international bodies.

The Goal of IACIB:

Prevention and control of infectious diseases mainly Filariasis, Malaria, Leishmaniasis, Rabies, HIV / AIDS & STD, Vector Control, Control of Environmental diseases including Tobacco Control, management of asthma & other allergic diseases, Arsenic, Non-formal Education etc. and rehabilitation of sufferers etc.

Organizational Speciality (Strength and Opportunities):

IACIB provides support to the disadvantage people in health as well as community based peoples who are more vulnerable towards HIV/AIDS & STDs, Asthma and Allergic diseases, Immunological disorders, Infectious diseases including Filariasis, Malaria, Leishmaniasis Rabies & Tobacco control etc. with necessary strength to implement health related program in the community.

Only IACIB has been working on filariasis elimination in Bangladesh. One Filaria Hospital was established by IACIB at Syedpur, Nilphamari. Another Filaria Hospital and Center for Disease Control (CDC) is under construction at Zinzira, Savar, Dhaka with support from Ministry of Social Welfare, Government of Bangladesh and to be completed by June 2012. These hospitals will provide Filariasis morbidity control service and other communicable diseases control.

It has Established 11 Community / Satellite clinic facilitated by Mobile van with Public Address system and arrangement for documentary film show for social mobilization for control of Filaria, Malaria and other communicable disease.

It has been working in Filaria endemic districts and filaria & Malaria co-endemic Kurigram district and malaria endemic Chittagong district and expanding its various activities in other districts.

IACIB is working with regular support from Ministry of Health and Family welfare of GOB through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)

Activities in abroad:

IACIB has been working at Afghanistan on filariasis control and has a plan for its expansion at Ghana and Canada. The activities will be on control of communicable diseases and establishment of old home for services to elderly people, with due approval of the Ministry of Health of respective countries, which is under process Audit and Account Management:

All activities including financial matters are audited yearly by registered CA firm under NGO affairs Bureau. Central account of IACIB is operated by any two of Chairperson, Secretary General and Treasurer. IACIB has separate Bank account for each project as guided by donors. Each account is operated by the Project Director of the respective project.

Bangladesh:

Bangladesh is a poorest under developed country in South East Asia Region surrounded by India, Myanmar and Bay of Bengal. The total population of the country is 160.00 million, per capita yearly income 830.00 USD, The maternal mortality rate is 300 – 500 per 100,000 live births, neonatal mortality rate is 52 per 1000 live birth and infant mortality rate is 37 per 1000 live birth. The Filariasis was 10.2% to 32.8% in 56 districts in 2001, which came down to average 0% to 1.2 % in different endemic districts in 2010 following successful Mass Drug administration (MDA) with active initiative and unparallel effort of Prof. Dr. Moazzem Hossain since 1999 following inception of this Global Program of ELF. Prof. Dr. Moazzem Hossain worked in different capacities since 1999 for long 11 years in Directorate General of Health Services, GOB, which is also unparallel in this country.

NTDs in Bangladesh : NTDs in Bangladesh are filaria, Kala-azar, STH, Rabies, Snake bites etc. Only IACIB has been working on these NTDs in the country since 1995.

Bede community in Bangladesh : IACIB has started a new project for rehabilitation and to provide health services to Bede community in Bangladesh , who are highly neglected group in the society.
